Who We Are

A Family for Every Child Adoption Agency is different than many existing agencies because we focus entirely on "special needs" adoptions.

Most of these children are over 6 years old, part of a sibling group, have some physical, mental or emotional disabilities, or are part of an ethnic minority. Unless they find their forever families soon, these children will likely spend the rest of their childhood in multiple foster care placements.

They do not have any more time to wait! We know, from working with many families over the last several years, we have a role to play in bridging the gap between really wonderful families and really wonderful children!

We can provide home studies for Oregon families just starting the adoption process. Our goal is to educate, support and encourage families through the adoption process.
Home Study Process

A Home Study is a report that is required by each state to determine the eligibility of adoptive parents. A Home Study can only be used for one adoption (sibling groups are considered one if done at the same time). Home Studies are kept confidential and are only shared with the professionals involved with the adoption.

This is the time that you will meet your adoption worker, who will write your home study. She/he will meet with you in your home to talk about your personal history, family relationships, what brought you to the decision of adoption, and the supports/resources available to you.

They will determine if your home is safe and has sufficient space for adopted child/children. This step will help you and the agency make the best possible decisions about whether placement of child/children will work out and to determine the characteristics of the children whom you will be most successful parenting.

Portland Adoption Orientation

About Our Family Support Program

Our Family Support program holds a support group on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. This group is for foster families and families in all stages of the adoption process.

This group is offered to support, share and encourage each other in the process of caring for children in the foster care system. Adoption can be a frustrating process for both families and children; we want to help you on this journey.

Come be a part of this group, together we can make a difference one child at a time. There are activities for children so please feel free to bring them with you.

We are meeting at the Emerald Valley Boys and Girls Club Westmoreland Branch, 5:30 - 7:30pm, 1545 W 22nd Ave, Eugene, OR 97405. For more information please contact Lisa at 541-343-2856 orlisa@afamilyforeverychild.org

Imagine

Being 6 years old and having your best years behind you

Being 10 years old and having a 10% chance of a forever family

Having a brown paper bag and 20 minutes to pack your belongings

Your skin is considered the "wrong" color

What it must be like when "mom" is not a safe word

Turning 18, and on your own with no family for support

Graduating or getting married and not having anyone to walk you down the aisle

IMAGINE HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

ONE FACE

ONE VOICE

ONE LIFE AT A TIME

A CHILD IS WAITING FOR YOU!

· Every child deserves a safe, loving, and permanent family.

· No child should linger in foster care or leave the system at age 18 without a permanent family of his or her own.

· Every child is adoptable.

We recognize that "Forever Families" come in all shapes and sizes. Just as children come in all shapes and sizes. A Family for Every Child Adoption Agency exists to help children waiting in foster care find their "Forever Families." We strive to find permanent homes for children who are waiting. We know that kids never outgrow the need for a "forever family." Please contact us if you think adoption might work for you; we can answer any questions you have or discuss concerns.

A child is waiting for their "Forever Family." You could be the one to make a difference for a child!

Here is how to get started and take the next step:

Attend an orientation meeting: an orientation meeting is where you will be given a basic understanding of:

The next step will be to complete the Parent Application packet or adoptive parent training; training will need to be completed before the home study can be completed.

The training sessions vary by area/location, 4 to 10 weeks, or weekend sessions. You will want to check into what is available in your area. The training sessions are designed to prepare prospective parents to better understand a child who comes out of the foster care system.

-Prepare you for adoption

-Challenge you to grow and develop as a parent

-Help you consider; what type of child can I successfully parent? Am I able to parent a child who has been neglected and/or abused to some degree?

The application will include items that you as the prospective parents need to provide before the home study process starts.

Nearly 81.5 million Americans have considered adopting a child. If just one in 500 of these adults adopted, every waiting child in foster care would have a permanent family.

But foster care adoption is often misunderstood, preventing children from finding forever families. Discover some of the most common misconceptions, and read about the reality behind each.

Myth

Foster care adoption may cost less than private infant or international adoption, but it's still expensive.

Reality

Foster care adoption normally costs little or nothing. The truth is that foster care adoption is not expensive, and there can be financial support available for parents who choose this path.

Myth

A biological parent can come to take an adopted child back.

Reality

This is a fear for two-thirds of the people considering adoption. However, biological parents have no way to gain back custody of the child or children once their parental rights are terminated.

Myth

Children enter foster care because they committed a crime.

Reality

This belief is held by 45 percent of Americans, but actually, children enter U.S. foster care through no fault of their own. Usually, they are victims of neglect, abandonment, or abuse.

Myth

A single parent can't provide a healthy environment for an adopted child.

Reality

A single parent can provide a loving, stable home. In fact, as the number of two-parent families declines, an increasing number of children live in single-parent homes.

Myth

Same-sex parents are not capable of providing a healthy environment for an adoptive child.

Reality

Practically every valid study to date concludes children of same-sex parents adjust well and grow up in positive environments.

Myth

No person over 55 can provide a healthy and loving environment for an adopted child.

Reality

This belief is held, erroneously, by 63% of Americans. In truth, almost one in four adopted children lives happily with an adoptive parent 55 years or older.

Unless stated otherwise, all statistics are from the National Foster Care Adoption Attitudes Survey, commissioned by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and conducted by Harris Interactive, November 2007.

Maybe you are worried that you don't make a lot of money? IT DOESN'T TAKE A LOT... Or think that you need to own your own home? YOU DON'T! Or perhaps you are a single parent wondering if adoption can work for you? IT CAN!

A Family For Every Child (AFFEC) is an umbrella organization with many programs. A Family for Every Child Adoption Agency (AFFEC AA) is one of those programs. While AFFEC serves families from all over the country. Our Adoption Agency serves only Oregon families.

The Adoption Agency was started in November of 2008. The Adoption Agency was founded with the goal of assisting children waiting in foster care to find their "Forever Families." Our Adoption Agency is different than many existing agencies because the focus is entirely on special needs adoptions - children over six years old, sibling sets, ethnic minorities, or children with a physical, mental, or emotional disability.Through our recruitment efforts we have found that there are many families who would welcome these children. By offering support we aim to find "Forever Families" for children previously labeled as "unadoptable".
