A Family For Every Child

July 2011

Russell

Age 10

Russell 10

Russell is an engaging child that is both humorous and talkative. Russell loves to skateboard, play basketball, ride his bike, play the guitar, play with action figures, and make up games that he can play with his peers. Russell enjoys seeing other people happy. Russell is also a very talented artist!

Russell has missed quite a bit of school and is therefore not at grade level, but he has made improvements and is catching up. He is academically behind mainly because of missing school and not because of his level of functioning. Russell's biggest areas of struggle are with reading and writing, but he is quite good at math and enjoys it. Russell is not currently in a mainstream school.

Russell has six siblings, and has supervised contact with some. While it is not appropriate for Russell to be placed with any of his siblings, it is important for Russell to maintain a connection and relationship with them. Russell currently has therapeutic phone visits with his mother. Russell has many extended family members that he occasionally receives cards and letters from throughout the year. Russell also has grandparents in Oregon that he keeps in contact with. Russell strongly identifies with his biological family, and it will be important and beneficial for him to keep a connection with them when he gets adopted.

Russell does not like to be alone and also has a history of difficulties sleeping. Russell is learning how to play well with others and let other children take the lead. He has grown significantly in terms of social skills.

Russell has an entire team behind him helping him to be successful in the community. He has a CASA who visits him regularly as well as various skills trainers who take him out of the home in the afternoons.

Lorenzo

Age 8

Lorenzo 8

Now legally free, Lorenzo can go out of state and anywhere!

Lorenzo and his older brother came into care in May 2009 due to their mother's physical disability and mental health issues which caused her to feel overwhelmed in caring for her sons. Lorenzo's foster parents describe him as "a good boy with a good attitude."

His foster mom says he "has a bubbly personality and always eventually tells the truth about things." She adds that he is "100% compliant eventually" but will challenge authority on occasion. He sleeps well and does not have nightmares or other difficulties and while he appears "anxious," he is also "happy."

Lorenzo's foster parents report he enjoys school and happily gets ready for it in the morning. Lorenzo enjoys playing with the other children in the home although they are older. In the past he had a hard time keeping up, but his healthy lifestyle in the foster home has helped him lose over 40 pounds and this is no longer a problem! He likes playing outside and enjoys running, playing ball or riding the big wheels and scooter.

The caregiver reported that Lorenzo does not tantrum or seek food; food has not been an issue and sometimes Lorenzo will not even finish the food on his plate. He does need to be supervised around food as he will eat what is left out, sneak or hoard food. The caregiver further stated that Lorenzo sometimes gets sad but overall is doing well and responds to limits and consistency.

Lorenzo is now a third grade student and no longer needs an IEP or academic supports in reading, writing, and math. Lorenzo's new family will not require specialized medical training or skills and should be a family that enjoys a regular rough and tumble boy with a big heart and a happy demeanor.

Lorenzo will want to maintain contact with his older brother who is supportive of adoption for Lorenzo and wants to maintain contact. His worker hopes to hear from active singles or couples in search of a positive parenting experience!

Families with older girls and younger kids are fine, but not older brothers, as he might try to "win over" an older brother figure in inappropriate ways.

Tony 11

Tony

Age 11

Tony is a wonderful, sweet guy with exceptional manners and great attachment skills. He works hard at making friends and equally as hard at being a good friend.

He enjoys family get togethers and he loves playing minature golf and playing arcade games. He also enjoys spending time with his grandmother with whom he has a close relationship.

It would be a great benefit both to Tony as well as his new family to help him support his cultural ties to his roots in Canadian First Nations. Tony greatly enjoys learning about his cultural connections and its history.

Tony has a sister, Gabriella, and they are not placed together.

While placing each child individually for adoption might meet their individual needs more fully, the children's worker is also interested in hearing from families who have the experience, skills, stamina, and love to adopt the children together. The children have strong ties and would love to be adopted by the same family. If placed separately, they will be counting on their adoptive families to help them maintain regular contact as they are growing up. Some level of open adoption will be needed, too, so that they can have contact with their father and their grandmother. Tony is legally free.

Tony's state worker wants to hear from couples and single parents with strong support from family, friends, and educational and counseling resources. Having parent(s) who practice positive reinforcements will lay important groundwork for Tony (and/or Gabby) to be successful. Clear rules, expectations, and limits, and consequences that are consistent and in line with the infractions will provide the kind of structure that helps Tony feel secure. Such parental modeling of behavior will help Tony learn to respond in similar ways.

Being willing to participate with Tony in counseling during his transition into his adoptive home would be a wonderful way for his new folks to show their love and commitment.

Shania Kayce

Shania and Kayce

Ages 5, 3

Don't let their tiny frames fool you, siblings Shania and Kayce can fill even the largest of rooms with their energy, enthusiasm, and grandiose personalities! Both unusually small for their ages, Shania and Kayce get to enjoy daily diets padded with butter, cream, meat, pastries, and anything else that will put big calories in their bellies and healthy meat on their bones---perhaps this is why they are so spirited! They are busy little children who are on the move from one activity to the next from the moment they wake up to the moment they fall asleep with little tolerance for boredom.

Shania has a wide range of favorite activities--including swinging, running, riding on riding toys, dress up, and pretending with her dollhouse and play kitchen--but she's very selective about which activity she wants to do at any one moment. She is specific and firm in her ideas of how she wants her day to go, and she is not always flexible if there is deviation. In her quieter moments, Shania is a snuggle-bug who loves to curl up in her foster mom's lap and read stories. She and her brother are very affectionate and respond very well to lots of hugs, kisses, and snuggles.

Kayce favors activities that keep him running and climbing, whether indoors or outdoors. He is strong, particularly given his small stature, and often looks like a ''bull in a china shop'' as he fearlessly explores his environment. He and Shania have a sweet relationship in that they are very aware that they ''belong'' together in a way that is different from the other children living in their home. Shania proudly states ''This is my brother!'' but she is just as likely to mischievously bonk him over the head with a toy as gently and lovingly kiss him.

These darling children deserve to have a nurturing, committed family to call their own. They have experienced significant neglect, loss, and emotional trauma in their short lives and are currently at optimal ages to truly bond and flourish in a stable, permanent environment. Given their medical and behavioral challenges, it would be ideal to find a family with some parenting experience in both the medical and behavioral arenas.

Arguably, Shania and Kayce have not yet had an opportunity to demonstrate their most delightful qualities, the discovery of which is bound to be a rewarding journey.

Jerome 7

Jerome

Age 7

Jerome is excited and usually always seen in a happy mood with a smile on his face. Jerome's communication continues to be limited, he is mostly non-verbal but communicates openly through hand signals. He is very social.

Jerome likes watching the Food Network channel.

Jerome needs a family that is there to meet all of his specific needs. Jerome would thrive in any home in which he is shown love and attention. Jerome would do well in a house with other children.

Jerome has 3-4 visits with his biological family throughout the year. He is emotionally attached to his previous foster home, which he was in from birth to six years old. He moved recently from the home due to concerns for the foster placement.

We Need Volunteers From Everywhere!

Volunteer Process:

1) Fill out

 this form

2) We will be in touch to walk you through the next steps

If you want to talk first, or email, please contact Hannah at

info@afamilyforeverychild.org

and/or 541-343-2856.

Roles (Only a few listed here, contact us for more)

Targeted Email Outreach:

Searching for families for children in urgent need of placement- After our training and support on using our systems and "How-to's", this role consists of sending out a targeted email to families that fit the criteria of a given child in need of a placement. For example it could be a certain area, 2 parents, no other kids, and so on. The email will include positive information about the child, some of the barriers/issues, as well as an image and contact info for next steps.

Often because of this simple email outreach (which can go out to 500 families at a time) we can find a placement in hours. We truly are using technology in the most effective and urgent way to find forever families. This is an amazing role to be a part of and very gratifying. You can do as few or as many a week as you like.
Each email is approx. 1 hour to prepare and 2 hours to respond with families (this is variable). This is our most important role, the more you do it the better and faster you will get. Involves really understanding and using our database.

We get "urgent" requests from case workers for

Volunteer Family Adoption Specialist:

5 hours a week per family. Take as many families as you like!

We have a Matching Assistance Program that partners with families that are currently in the adoption process. This program is geared towards families who have not yet had a placement and have been in the process for a year or longer.

The goal of this program and the task of the Family Adoption Specialist is to walk alongside families in their journey. Give them feedback on their family profile page, perform child searches for them, correspond with caseworkers on their behalf and surround them with resources and encouragement.

While this may sound as a though it's a difficult position, please note that all training is provided by our organization and requires only that you are consistent and compassionate.

If you excel in communicating, following up and have the capacity to give 5 hours a week per family, we would love to have you. We ask for a 6 month commitment as families need as much consistency as possible.

This volunteer can live anywhere in any state, all work is done on the phone/Internet/email.

Logo/Linking Partner Volunteer:

We are only as strong as our searches, so to drive traffic to us we need to be linked from as many web sites/partners as we can. We have a template and logo that we give our outreach volunteers to use to help us increase the web hits and, therefore, families. This volunteer can live anywhere in any state, all work is done on the web/email. If you would like to be involved in this effort or have websites/businesses or partners you would like to suggest, please email.

Matching Family/Child Search Specialist:

Searches national sites and compiles a list of kids that fit the criteria of our families and produce a list for each family once a week. We provide a large list of sites to search and sample templates for the list and a how-to, plus whatever training you may need. This volunteer can live anywhere in any state, all work is done on the web/email. This is very rewarding as you are actually involved in the matching of families and kids, on your own time and days.

State Representative

for outreach to case workers/agencies/Heart Galleries and potential partners, in each state. This Volunteer can live anywhere in any state, all work is done on the web/email. We all know of partners, businesses, organizations and others that need to be on our team. We are happy to supply you with sample letters and/or templates for emails/calls to engage partners. This can look like:

*Starting a new Heart Gallery

*Recruiting photographers

*Building media connections

*Bringing case workers on board to photo list their kids

*Gathering Support information for your state, county by county or city by city that we will then put on the web

*Linking our website with partners

*Reaching out to agencies to build relationships to help their families with our Matching Assistance Program

*Recruiting volunteers

*Blogging about us

*Gathering email addresses for our newsletter list, this is often the first way we engage people and educate them in who we are

*Grants/RFP's/funding opportunities

*Assisting other efforts/Heart Galleries/agencies in the state that we can in any way

*Any info for our website from news feed info about your state to child listing to support, new efforts and so on.

Any number of hours can be spent, we can either train you on our system to enter state information or you can keep a record on your own and we will do the data entry. We offer support daily as you move through this role and discover new ways we can partner. We encourage "outside the box" thinking and are open to all partnership ideas. We will provide you with letters, linking templates, sponsor flyers, brochures, whatever you need.

Child Listing Volunteer:

We are currently working to partner with photo listing agencies/Heart Galleries/individual social workers and others from other states to list more children on our websites. This is a free service we offer to help more children and families connect.

We need volunteers who can help list these children in our database and on our sites. All training is provided. This volunteer can live anywhere in any state, all work is done on the web/email. If you can pay attention to detail, this is the job for you! Any number of hours a week would be great! 2-3 hours of skype/phone/webinar/how-to training is available, in whatever way works best for you.

We are only as good as the children we can help-
