A FAMILY FOR EVERY CHILD

JULY 2010

Meet Our New Family

Family

When my former husband of almost ten years suddenly passed away, I became a widow with two young children at the age of 31. At this time, the Bible verse James 1:27 really spoke to what I was experiencing; to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. During the hardest time I have ever faced, I learned about God's provision for the widow and the orphan.

I remarried and with my husband Dale (who also had two children from his previous marriage) we had a beautiful daughter together. We then felt our family was now complete. Our older 4 children were all grown and our 13-year-old was starting eighth grade.

We live in Louisiana and my husband's company wanted us to transfer to Georgia after Hurricane Katrina. Our place was damaged from the Hurricane and there was no electricity for over 3 months. No one could get to our house, much less buy it. We prayed about it and felt God was asking us to put our trust in him and to turn down the transfer. For the first time in our adult lives we left the protection of the corporate umbrella, and eventually began our own business.

During our second year in business we began to pray about how we were going to use the money that He was sending. As we prayed about what we felt He was laying on our hearts, we knew God's heart is about people. We felt a strong calling to invest in children.

We soon became foster parents with the intention of adopting a child a few years younger than our youngest daughter, who had just turned 13. Then the call came, "would we consider two?"  My husband (who had spent three years in foster care growing up himself) had been separated from his siblings while in foster care and we knew the answer had to be yes. November 24th, 2008 was our first visit with Matt & Laken.

After spending most of the next few weeks with us, December 8th was the final "move in day". Matt and Laken were home forever! Although we were seasoned parents, the transition was not without challenges. We learned to seek help when we needed it, and worked through each situation, one day at a time.

People sometimes ask me when I knew they were mine. I can't say the exact day I knew, but God knew from the beginning. We completed our adoption on May 26th, 2010 which is now our "forevermore day". We can't imagine our life without any of our children!

Child/Sibling Group Family Searches

Filling out the search form below will give use the information we need to search our database of over 5000 families for you.  To do this, we enter this information in our database, pull up families that fit this criteria and develop a targeted template and email that will go out to as many as 500 families at one time. Images are very important, so please do your best to supply one, it will make a difference.  Please give us 3-4 business days to complete this.

Search Form

We ask for your contact information as we will direct the families to you if they are interested. We do our best to use the information you give us to give to provide the families you think will be most successful for your child/children. Please be as open as you can about area. If a child has to move, a two- hour move may be as dramatic as one across the country. When open to a bigger area, you are likely to get a better skilled, more specific group for your children.

AFFEC Matching Assistance Program

Do you want to be "found" for a waiting child?

Every day children's case workers search for suitable homes for hundreds of foster kids nationwide. In this search, they are looking at parenting qualifications such as:

  • Parent Training and Education
  • Ability to accommodate special needs
  • Family background and situation

Having your profile, narrative, home study, and possibly a video ready for a searching case worker greatly increases the chance that you will be selected as a potential family for a child.

High-tech equipment isn't needed to provide this information to us. Regular family photos can be taken with an ordinary digital camera and uploaded via the internet to the AFFEC website. The profile consists of information about how to reach you, your situation, and your parenting experiences.

Did you know: The age of children waiting to be adopted ranges from less than a year old to 21, with the median age being 7.5. Children often wait five years or more to be adopted, move three or more times in foster care and often are separated from siblings.

There are many variables that determine how long it will take to complete the adoption process. Some of these include if  pre-adoptive classes are required, the length of time to complete the homestudy and the length of time to identify a child for your family. On average, the adoption process may take one to two years.

Needed: Adoption Inquiry Submissions Specialist

Mentor Volunteer

We need volunteers for this 4-20 hour a week role. You will be answering inquiries from families and submitting family home studies to the child's case worker. We have a room set up for Volunteer Submission Inquiry with four or five computers specifically for these tasks. Hours are flexible and the ideal is for this job to be completed from home.

We get upwards of 300 adoption inquiries from our web site each month and need regular, dependable, committed volunteers to assist us in supporting families through the adoption inquiry and Home Study submission process.

Our Submission and Inquiry team is all volunteer and we are in need of more dedicated individuals that would like to assist in changing the lives of foster children.

Child Specialist: Can be done at home or in AFFEC home office. Does not need to be a local volunteer.

-Enter children in our database which allows them to be seen on one of our our websites.

-Adding children into our Web database, editing as a child's status changes, updating picture, adding media links etc. Check in with child's case worker for monthly updates.

-We get "urgent" requests from case workers for placement for children, this we see as an opportunity for us to get families in front of case workers. We go into our database of over 5000 families, do a search on families that would be a good fit for these children (two-parent, open to older kids, a certain age group, race etc.). We then send an email with the child's information and ask if they would consider this child. After this, we send the information to the case worker.  We can often get 20+ families in 24 hours.

-Using social media as a tool for recruiting families on individual kids.

Please contact us at AFFEC to get involved in our mission.

We are in need of your old computers! Technology is a huge part of our organization, most of what we do is on the web. We often have a volunteer staff of 5-7 people submitting home studies, answering adoption inquiries, listing kids on the website and much more.

If you have a computer you no longer need, or feel the need to upgrade, we would be grateful for your leftovers! Contact us at:
