The Natal-Pohlers Family Profile

We would like to welcome to our home a boy or a girl preferably who is 14 years or less. We can accommodate a sibling group of up to 2 children. All ethnic background will blend in with our family. We are also open to children with special needs and do not mind having contact with the child's biological or foster parents (by email or by phone, mail or in person) provided the parent was/is not abusive to the child. Jon and myself have a lot of experience raising children as we have helped raise our nephews, and are currently raising our son Andrew who is also adopted.

Introduction

Our names are Raul Natal and Jon Pohlers. We have been together 25 years, and believe that everyone deserves to be loved unconditionally. Both of our parents have been together 55 plus years , and we have a strong sense of the importance of a family. We believe that learning happens both in and out of school, and like to go to events that happen within our community. We always celebrate birthdays with our extended family, as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve, 4th of July. Family milestones are important, and we like to attend all school events for our extended family when possible. Jon is 50 years old and I (Raul) 54 years old. We have one child who is 14 years old.

Raul works full-time for Southwest Airlines as a flight attendant for 23 years and has a very flexible work schedule with an average of 16 to 18 days off a month.

Jon works full-time at Meridien Research that provides patients and families in Central Florida an opportunity to take part in clinical research trials for a wide variety of medical conditions and has a Monday-Friday / flexible work schedule.

We both are members and attend regularly Christ Church Unity in Orlando. We volunteers with the pre-teens during Sunday School and retreats and are both Christians. Jon and I believe in God but we respect all religions, and would support a child's already existing beliefs.

Together we enjoy watching movies, cooking, spending time with friends and family and traveling together.

Home and Community

We live in the State of Florida. Our home is a 4-bedroom single family home with a backyard, sidewalks, parks within driving distance. Our schools are A rated and we in a gated /security community suburban neighborhood with mature trees, street lights, park and pool. We know our neighbors very well and look out for each other. Our city has multiple theme parks, several museums, and many activities for children as well as adults (major league Soccer, Basketball, College football). We are close to the beach and most major theme And water Parks. We usually like to maintain an annual pass for a water or theme park.

Jon and I have spend many hours in classes, research and learning to make sure we are prepared for the future. It would be an honor and a privilege for us to help a child reach their dream of having a forever home.

Raul enjoys exercising/working out/outdoor activities, travel on a Cruise Ship, meditating, cooking, spending time with family and friends, going to the movies or a play/theater, travel to foreign countries. Jon enjoys... Cooking, the outdoors (camping/canoeing/hiking/exploring), learning new things and teaching others, reading, outdoor projects, gardening, refurbishing, computers/electronics, researching family history/genealogy, playing ps4 games, watching college sports and pro-soccer, history and sight-seeing, visiting local theme parks and water parks, state parks, national parks.

Orlando is fortunate to have two children's hospitals within a short driving distance. There is a adult hospital within 9 miles of our home. There is a charter school within 9 a mile of our home, a ninth grade center within a mile. Orlando has a brand new performing arts center, and an active arts community. Both boy and girl scout programs are available. Devereux is available for counseling and other psychiatric services. University of Central Florida is 5.8 miles of our house.

Parenting Experience

We adopted our son Andrew from foster care, and have been his parents since March 2016. Before that, We helped take care of Raul's nephews (3 boys) and 1 Grand-nephew and a niece on the weekends and on cruises/vacation since they were born. Jon has helped them with school projects, or when they needed tutoring in some subjects. We attended the Pride/MAP training for foster/adoptive parents here in Florida. The training focused on helping a child work through the losses and trauma they have experienced. We also attended various training courses Conscious Discipline Training that is an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach with Dr. Vicky Bailey and Suicide Prevention Training at Church. We are involved with Andrews school and we are part of the children and teen ministry at Christ Church Unity in Orlando.

Support

Our parents / sister /brother and adult nephews will be available to assist when needed, as well as our close family friends who also have their own children. Devereux (the local sponsoring agency that assisted us with our home study) has support/counseling services for children and their families. Motivation to Adopt

Motivation to Adopt

Now that our son has successfully attached, we are eager to expand our family. We have always wanted to be Dads for most of our adult life. We have spend many hours in classes, research and learning to make sure we are prepared for the future. It would be a dream come true for us to help a child reach their dream of having a forever home.
