The Stekervetz-Travis Family Profile

We would like to adopt a child between the ages of 5 and 14. We are open to children of either gender who are part of a sibling group of up to 2 kids. We prefer to adopt a child of Caucasian ethnic background. We are open to children with mild special needs. We are willing to facilitate contact with the child's relatives or foster family provided it's in the best interests of the children.

Introduction

Our names are Justin Stekervetz (Age 37) and Corey Travis (Age 36). We do not yet have any children. Our hobbies include hiking, cultural activities, visiting museums, traveling, socializing with friends and skiing.

Justin works full-time for the US Department of Homeland Security as an IT Director and has a flexible, family friendly work schedule.

Corey works full-time for Arlington County Government as the Financial Management Bureau Chief for the Department of Human Services.

We are both atheists and do not prescribe to any form of organized religion. We do, however, intend to raise our children with a strong moral compass, ethical values and beliefs which respect the rights of self and others. We intend to support our children's desire to participate in spiritual beliefs and/or religion by accompanying our children to a place of worship within our community if they express a desire to do so.

We are fans of several local sports teams including the Washington Capitals (Ice Hockey), Washington Nationals (Baseball). Some of our favorite TV shows include The Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife, Once Upon a Time, Person of Interest, The Flash, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, historical documentaries, The Universe and many others. For movies we enjoy Star Trek, Star Wars, The Avengers, X-Men, Into the Woods, Out of Africa, Sordid Lives, Clue, Moulin Rouge, and The Imitation Game. Musicians include mainly DJs that produce house music, and any artist that is popular in the pop genre. We enjoy cultural activities, cooking together, watching movies, traveling, socializing with friends and playing electronic and card games.

Home and Community

We live in the District of Columbia and our home is an end-unit row home. We live in a City/Urban neighborhood and maintain friendships with our neighbors. We have two friendly and playful cats named Claude and Flower.

Since we are conveniently located by a number of amenities, as a family we will engage in cultural activities such as visiting the numerous museums in the area and engaging in the arts. The area provides of wealth of recreational areas that we will visit to promote bonding and physical activity.

We reside in a newly constructed community in the Washington, DC area that is diverse and comprised of varied family compositions. With a large number of children residing in the community, there will be opportunities for our children to make new friends and play in the recreational areas. Local organizations also sponsor after-school activities. There are no shortage of activities occurring throughout the year in our area! Washington, DC provides a rich array of options for education. DC Public School system provides educational services to our neighborhood. We also have access to area charter schools; some of which are nationally recognized. In addition, we have access to leaders within the education system to ensure our children have access to the very best resources to excel.

Parenting Experience

Justin has two nieces and two nephews and has provided for their care at varying times throughout their lives. Corey is eight years older than his youngest brother and spent a great deal of time looking after his brother. We both have a solid understanding of parenting and the developmental needs of children.

Support

We have numerous resources for support. Beyond the therapeutic resources provided by professionals in the area, we have family members in the area on both sides of our family that are willing to assist and are eager to be involved in our growing family.

Motivation to Adopt

We both adore children and have always wanted to be parents. We decided that the most reasonable and viable way to extend our family is through adoption given the realities of being a same sex couple. In addition, we realize that their are a large number of children awaiting their forever homes and would feel honored to provide a loving and stable environment for children to thrive in.
