Hero for a Day 2022

Thank you so much to everyone who attended, volunteered at, donated to, and otherwise supported our 2022 Hero For a Day event! It was our first in-person Hero For a Day event since 2019, and we had the oppertunity to turn nearly 150 community kids into superheroes. Attendees were able to meet their favorite comic book characters, and then learn how to be heroes themselves. Between touring a fire truck, meeting ambassador animals, rock climbing with Spiderman, exploring police vehicles, constructing sailboats, and more: it was an action-packed day we'll never forget.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing community partners and super sponsors for making this event happen.

Calling All Heroes!

This event allows foster children and community children alike to be transformed into the heroes we know them to be.  Hero For A Day is for children ages 2 to 18 and is a day filled with tons of fun activities designed to create an educational and fun experience for all of our heroes while we raise awareness about our foster care system and the children in it waiting for their forever families. Through Zoom, you and your child will get to see your favorite superheroes, and the local heroes we see saving lives everyday.

We want to also use this event as an opportunity for our community to thank our local first responders and frontline essential members during this health crisis. Without them, we would not be able to hold this event and continue serving our foster community.

This event is free, but we do ask you to register before the event if you can. Each registration comes with the opportunity to come and pick up a Hero Kit from our office to utilize during the event. If you live out of town and want a kit, we can ship one to you (just pay the cost of shipping). Email events@afamilyforeverychild.org to inquire about your Kit.

We will contact each registrant individually with details and to give you the Zoom code to log in before it starts.

Contact us at events@afamilyforeverychild.org with any questions, comments, or concerns!

Hero for a Day 2019

Thank You!

This year over 150 heroes enjoyed many stations and each one brought a unique and fun activity. The kids did crafts, watched a magic show, assisted in a surgical “operation”, visited with therapy dogs & donkeys, sat in fire trucks, tried on SWAT gear and so much more!

Event Information

Hero For a Day is a chance for kids of all ages, genders, and backgrounds to come together and learn what it takes to be a hero. Kids meet their favorite comic book characters in person, and then learn how to be a hero themselves from real-life community heroes like firefighters, first responders, scientists, medical personnel, and more! Attendees participate in hands-on activities and get up close and personal with their role models and community advocates. Explore a fire engine, race model cars, and meet animal ambassadors like K9 police dogs, therapy goats, and native reptile species! Attendees forge their own superhero identity, don a mask and cape, and learn how to protect the environment, prevent fires, save lives, and more.

Hero For a Day empowers local community kids and at-risk youth to make positive choices and do good in their community. Providing a child with a cape and a superhero identity reminds children that they have the power to change the world.

More information about Hero For a Day 2023 is coming soon. Check back later for dates, times, and details about next year's event!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this event only for boys? Not at all! Kids of all genders deserve the chance to be a hero.

Is this event only for foster kids? This event is for kids of all backgrounds. Foster kids attend the event for free, but community kids are welcome to join in the fun for a small ticket fee. All proceeds from the event go to helping foster and at-risk youth.

Can I drop my kids off at the event and pick them up afterwards? No, children must be supervised at all times during the event.

What time is the event? Are there specific time slots, like at Princess For a Day? How long does the event last? Hero For a Day lasts from 12pm to 3pm at the Bob Keefer Center. There are no assigned time slots, and families are welcome to attend at any period during those hours. The event is self-guided: you and your child explore the booths and stations at your own pace. This can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your child's speed. Younger children typically take longer to peruse the event than teenagers, and so we typically recommend that families with young children come in the earlier half of the event.

My child would love this, but we can't afford it. Are there scholarships available? A Family For Every Child strives to make our events as accessible as possible for children of all backgrounds. Foster children and children in the AFFEC Mentor Program attend the event for free. In addition to this, we are excited to announce that we've partnered with Relief Nursery and ShelterCare to offer free admission to families in their network as well. If you do not fit these criteria, and feel that money is an obstacle to your child's attendance, please email us directly at events@afamilyforeverychild.org to enquire about scholarships.

Will my favorite superhero be there this year? What about my favorite station from last year? We love the passion our community has for superheroes and Hero For a Day. Unfortunately, do to the ever-changing nature of our community's businesses, as well as our status as a nonprofit, we can not guarantee that one particular station or hero will be there on any given year. The activities at the event are always changing, which allows for a new experience each year for our repeat heroes! That being said, we always take fan-favorites into account when planning our events.

I'm having issues with the sign up form. It won't submit, or I'm not sure if it submitted. Is there a way I can check? We're so sorry to hear that you've been having trouble with the sign up form! If your registration goes through successfully, you'll recieve a confirmation email. The sign up form has difficulties working with mobile devices, we strongly reccomend using a laptop or desktop computer to complete the form. Still having issues, or need to confirm your registration? Email us at events@afamilyforeverychild.org, or give us a call at 541-343-2856. We'd be happy to double check your information, or enter your registration directly into our system.

Will we get a physical invitation to the event in the mail? At this point in time, we are not sending out physical invitations to Hero For a Day. Upon registering, you will receive a digital registration receipt.

Are walk-ins accepted? While pre-registration is highly reccomended to ensure your spot at the event, walk-ins are accepted on the day of.

I would love to get involved. Are you still looking for volunteers? A Family For Every Child's events are almost 100% staffed with volunteers. We always have volunteer positions available in all of our events, and are likely in urgent need of more help! If you're interested in volunteering at Hero For a Day, please click the red 'Volunteer' tab the top of the page, or contact us directly at events@afamilyforeverychild.org, or 541-343-2856.

How do businesses and organizations sign up to have a table or activity station at the event? Is there a cost associated with it? We love giving local heroes, businesses, and organizations the chance to work one-on-one with the kids in our community, and the kids love hearing about all types of professions and activities. Do you have a business, organization, job, or after-school program you think could be a valuable resource to kids? Contact us directly at events@afamilyforeverychild.org, or at 541-343-2856, to enquire about hosting a table or activity at Hero For a Day. While we can't guarantee we can accommodate every request, there are no fees associated with tabling at the event.

I'm interested in supporting this event, but I'm unable to volunteer. How else can I get involved? Do you need supplies? As the event grows each year, we're constantly trying to keep up with the demand. We're always on the hunt for capes, masks, and goodie bag supplies for the kids at the event. Interested in helping us make sure every kid leaves the event with a cape and mask? Consider being a real-life hero and shop our Amazon wishlist to ensure that every child leaves the event a hero. Sponsor Hero for a Day

On behalf of A Family for Every Child we would like to invite you to partner with us for our annual “Hero for a Day” event, supporting foster children in search of their forever families.  Hero for a Day is an opportunity for children to be transformed in to Heroes and spend time with heroes from our community, and those from the pages of their favorite comic books.

Children who attend also meet real life heroes, like firefighters, doctors, police, and soldiers. Professionals from around the community in a variety of professions come to show the kids what they do, and offer insights for children into what they can be when they grow up. Kids and their families will get to talk with local first responders around our community, engage with the community through unique experiences and activities, meet their favorite superheroes and hear stories about saving the day. Hero for a Day helps further our mission by raising awareness about foster care in Oregon. If you have any questions about becoming a sponsor for Hero For A Day 2023, please contact our events team at 541-343-2856, or at events@afamilyforeverychild.org.
