Family Description
We are so looking forward to having a child or children join our family! We are a Mom (Deirdre), a Dad (Michael) and seven-year-old (Troy). We feel an age of around 5-12 is a good age for our family but we are flexible. Troy is very much hoping for a brother to share his life with. We would be happy with even more siblings if it is a good fit of either gender. Our extended family is interracial, so we are open to all races. As a person who was adopted, I can appreciate and understand this experience in a very personal way. We have a completed Home Study and can provide any other information requested. Thank you!
Preference Description
We are hoping to adopt a child (or children) between the ages of 5-12 of any ethnicities, and we are flexible. Troy is so excited for the possibility of new siblings with whom he could share his life, and we would love to be able to expand our family.
The Perkins Family Profile
We are so looking forward to bringing a child or children into our family! We have a seven year old son who is very much hoping for a brother and would be happy with even more siblings if it is a good fit. Our extended family is interracial so we are open to all races. I was adopted, so I can appreciate and understand this experience in a very personal way.
Introduction
We pretty much following routines that we experienced growing up ourselves. We enjoy cooking and make breakfast and dinner most nights. About once a week, we go out to dinner. On a school day, there is time to relax and play after school, then we have dinner and do homework together, and then it's bath time and snuggle time with a book. Michael likes to grill, and we love it eat outside, especially when it's nice weather. Troy is interested in baseball, soccer, hiking and exploring and is really good at Minecraft and other games. On the weekend, we like doing outdoor activities like the beach or the pool, exploring new places, biking, and fishing. We really enjoy travelling too. We have a dog "Lucca Fluffermuffin" who is an Australian Shepherd. He lives for getting lovings and walks. We also have chickens who are very friendly and lay eggs for us all year.
Home and Community
We live in a nice, safe, kid-friendly neighborhood. The neighbors all know each other and often have BBQs on the weekends. We have a big back yard and lots of trees and a garden where we plant things and eat the fruits and veggies we grow. Having our children go to a good school is very important to us. We like our kids attending a school that nurtures their educational, social and emotional growth and inspires a love for learning. We also go to church each Sunday and then usually we get donuts or eat brunch out.
Parenting Experience
Besides raising our seven year old, Michael has two sons from a previous marriage. Brandon is 32 and lives in Oregon with his wife Kirsten and their two young children. Shane lives in Dana Point, California and works and surfs. We are close to them and see them often. Deirdre is a Vice Principal at a high school in Portland and has worked as a teacher and educator for almost 20 years. Michael has been a coach for countless teams for his sons. Deirdre and Michael have completed the Department of Human Services Foundations Training required for all certified foster and adoptive parents in the state of Oregon, as well as numerous other trainings.
Support
Our extended family is very important to us, and we are close to them. Michael's mother, Mary Anne, is called "Nanny" by all of her grandchildren, and she is the matriarch of the family. The love she gives to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren is beyond words. For her, there is nothing more important than family. She is always there, offering her love and support. There are also many aunts, uncles and cousins who are close knit and always have fun being together.
Motivation to Adopt
Adoption has always been part of our family dream. Deirdre always knew she wanted to adopt. She was adopted as a young child, and was lucky enough to join a family who loved her very much. Michael and Deirdre have always talked about adopting, and when their biological son Troy was old enough, started to talk to him about it. He was so excited, and even though years have gone by since we started this journey, we all have never given up hope that we could expand our family.
