Family Description
We are a family of 4 (mom and dad and two little girls aged 3 and 5) who are looking to expand our family with either 1 or a sibling group of 2 children in our home in Salem, Oregon. We are a moderately active family who likes to go out and have fun with park visits, zoo trips, hiking and camping but we also like to have relaxing time at home that includes movie and game nights. We have a highly energetic but very sweet dog named Rholund who adores playing fetch and is always ready to go on an adventure. We have an extensive support group through family and friends who love on our current children and they are looking forward to doing the same with any children we adopt.
Preference Description
We are looking for either 1 or 2 boys or girls between the ages of 0 and 14 of any ethnic background. We are open to mild to moderate conditions but no serious, permanent disabilities.
The Prewitt Family Profile
We are interested in adding 1 Child or a sibling group of 2 children, either boys or girls, to our family regardless of race/ethnicity/background. We are interested in ages 0-14 and are willing to work through correctable medical issues or mental/developmental delays as well as emotional issues such as PTSD and some attachment disorders. We hope to include our adoptive child(ren) in creating family traditions to help incorporate some of their previous experiences as well as help them create a life book to remember their previous milestones and add to it as they hit more memorable moments later in life. We are open to family and previous foster care placement communication as long as the child(ren) wants to, and it is healthy and safe for those we adopt.
Introduction
We live a relatively quiet life because of having young children in the home and needing to stick to regular bedtimes/routines. Most evenings we are home. During the day the kids frequently do crafts, go on walks, play with other kids and do preschool activities. Most weekends we do activities as a family such as visiting parks, going to the zoo, going on hikes/walks, game/movie nights or visiting friends and family. On Sundays after church we usually go to a local coffee shop and get treats before going to do something more active. As far as holiday traditions go, we usually host Thanksgiving at our house and just after thanksgiving we have "tree day" where we set up the Christmas tree, decorate, have snacks and listen to Christmas music.
Home and Community
We live in a suburban area in Salem, OR. The neighborhood we live in is relatively new, and there are many other families both with and without children that live nearby. We live less than a mile from a neighborhood park, and are also very close to multiple schools. Our house is a 2 story single family home with a decent-sized yard that is fully fenced for our kids and dog to play in safely. We have a large garden area as well as a covered patio to be able to enjoy being outside often. We have plenty of space indoors as well to host movie and game nights for when the weather is not as pleasant.
Parenting Experience
We have two biological children in our home and have experience parenting up to the age of 4 (the current age of our oldest daughter). We both have experience teaching other children through children's Ministries at church, helping in our church's nursery, or teaching swim lessons.
Support
Richard's parents currently watch our girls regularly and are willing to watch any children that we adopt. All of our friends are supportive of us going through adoption and would be good emotional resources for us and our adoptive children. Our church is also supportive of us and we are plugged into a life group with other young families that we would be able to talk to. We also plan to take advantage of several of the services that AFFEC offers to help find other adoptive families to get together with and/or bounce ideas off of.
Motivation to Adopt
We are very excited to add to our family. God has placed adoption on our hearts and has provided for us in multiple ways, allowing adoption to be a reality for us to pursue. Although we know this road won't be easy, we are committed to making a permanent home for the child(ren) we end up adopting and hope to learn all we can about the new member(s) in our family.
