Family Description

We are a caring, Christian family of three, eager to grow our family through adoption. Hi! I'm Debbie, and my husband is Phil. Our son, Joshua, is ten years old, born in Dec. 2007. We would like to adopt a girl, age nine or younger. We are open to adopting a child with mild special needs. We have a racial preference for a Caucasian child, but are open to discussion. We are willing to have an open adoption and to preserve the child's previous connections/relationships if it's in her best interest.

Preference Description

Able to get along well with our current biological 10 year old son.

Introduction

I have loved working with kids my whole life and I love being a mom and taking care of my family! I was a youth group volunteer and was a camp counselor for many summers. I attended George Fox University and earned a degree in elementary education. I then earned my masters in Special Education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and am proficient in American Sign Language. I am a licensed teacher and work part time as a substitute teacher. I like to sing, read, and to write books! My dad lives nearby. We see my brothers and two nieces (around Joshua's age) at family gatherings like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and at family reunions. Phil is a UPS hub worker. He has been involved in many youth activities, providing child care for family members when he was a teen, and coaching little league teams. He likes sports, traveling, reading, movies, camping and hiking. Phil has a large family. Two of his seven older sisters live close by.

Home and Community

We live in a three bedroom house in Gresham, OR, right outside Portland. We have lived in our current home one year, having recently bought it to make room for our new daughter! I love organizing our new space. We are making friends with our neighbors and we have a park nearby. We love animals and hope to eventually have pets in our new home: cats and dogs, maybe even a pair of guinea pigs!

City Bible Church has been our home church for over 11 years, and once a month we teach in Joshua's City Kids class.

Joshua is in the fourth grade at City Christian School, where we both volunteer our time.

Joshua is a fun and sensitive sweetheart. And pretty funny! He likes history and playing computer games. He is creative and he wants to be a computer programmer. He likes computer class at school and is a hard-working student in all his subjects. He loves playing Rock/Paper/Scissors Tag with his friends, both boys and girls. He enjoys playing at our local park and riding his scooter. In summer he enjoys swimming. He likes all animals, but his favorites are cats, dogs, and a new favorite: dolphins. He is a picky eater, but he always has room for his favorites, bacon and hash browns. He doesn't like bullies or people who cheat at games.

We are a tight-knit family, devoted to our son, Joshua, and to our community. There are many community resources in our area.

Phil and I both volunteer for Foster Parents Night Out, a service our church hosts once a month.

Parenting Experience

In our own parenting and our broad experience with youth, we've learned a great deal. We've completed our adoption home study, background checks and attended parent training courses.

Support

Our family, friends, and church family are all very excited for us and ready to welcome our new daughter into their arms, as well.

Motivation to Adopt

We are quite confident that our combined experiences have strengthened our ability to parent and help our future daughter reach her full potential, and we are committed to everything adoption entails. We've gained a great deal of wisdom and maturity and want to offer a secure and nurturing environment to another child.
