We are hopeful to find a forever child that is open minded and willing to try new things. We would love a child that is honest, creative, outgoing and genuinely happy. We embrace differences and are hopeful to find a child with the same mentality.

The McDermott Family Profile

We would like to adopt a child who is less than 9 years old. We are open to boys or girls. We feel we can accommodate a sibling group of up to 2 kids. We prefer to adopt a child of Black, Biracial or Mixed ethnic background. We are open to children with many, many special needs. We do not mind having contact with the child\'s biological parents (by email or by phone or by mail or in person ) provided the parent was/is not abusive to the child. We do not mind having continuing contact with the child\'s former foster parents, by email or by phone or by mail or in person . In general, We are hopeful to find a forever child that is open minded and willing to try new things. We would love a child that is honest, creative, outgoing and genuinely happy. Introduction

Our names are Mandy and Brian McDermott. I am currently 34 years old. My partner is currently 37 years old. We do not yet have any children Mandy enjoys anything and everything outside. She enjoys running, riding her bike, gardening and playing on the beach. She also enjoys all types of crafts and cooking. Brian and Mandy both enjoy playing all sports. Brian enjoys politics, playing chess, going for walks and watching sports. I work full-time for Charleston Collegiate School as a High School Spanish Teacher and have a flexible work schedule. My partner works full-time for Charleston Collegiate School as a High School Administrator and Teacher . We both believe in spirituality versus organized religion. We are both Christians but do not attend church.

Brian enjoys college basketball and has a huge affinity for Coach K. He also enjoys the Raiders, USC (southern Cal) and the Dutch National Soccer team. In regards to tv shows, we enjoy Seinfeld, politics, and cartoons. Our music taste is an ecclectic mix- anywhere from Miles Davis to Nas. We enjoy spending time with one another. Every night we have a sit down dinner to stop and enjoy one another's company. We feel that this is very important in our fast paced lives. We enjoy cleaning the house together, taking the dog for walks, cooking and lots of home improvement projects.

Home and Community

We live in the State of South Carolina. Our home is a duplex. We live in a Suburban neighborhood. We are close to our neighbors. We have one dog that was rescued.

We are hopeful that our forever child will enjoy the outdoors and playing sports. We also hope to be heavily involved with activities at our school. We live in a huge community with lots of different subdivisions. Our subdivision has its own pool. As a big community there are three olympic size pools, a recreation center, basketball courts, tennis courts, dog parks, baseball fields, hiking trails and sidewalks throughout. It is a very safe community with two schools within walking distance. We have numerous schools within the area: private and public. We have numerous options in regards to schooling but are hopeful that our forever child will attend our school where we teach. The schools around here are somewhat diverse and do have options.

Parenting Experience

As educators and prior coaches, we both have witnessed numerous styles of parenting. We feel as though we are parents to these children while they are on our campus. Additionally, Mandy was a nanny for the majority of her adolescent years until she was 30. She helped raise numerous children. Communication is our strongest strength. We are both wiling to share and compromise for the best interest of one another. We have a very healthy respect for one another. We both are goal setters and follow through. We also both enjoy having fun even if that is dancing in our kitchen or playing in the rain. PATIENCE and understanding! Brian and his sister were adopted so he knows first hand the challenges that will come about with adoption. We are also a biracial couple that embraces the potential challenges the harsh world may bring. COMMUNICATION is key! We have completed numerous hours od training to become adoptive parents. Mandy is also trained to work as a volunteer at MUSC medical hospital in the NICU unit. She is also ACA (canoe and kayak ) certified.

Support

We are both trained with Darkness to Light, CPR / first aid trained and feel comfortable using any and all resources that we may need in the future. We are not shy nor scared to ask for help. We have two incredibly loving families- some of which are local. We are friends with other adoptive parents and we have great support from our school.

Motivation to Adopt

We both know the value and appreciation we have for family. Family is so important to both of us and we feel that every child should have a loving and caring family. All children deserve to be loved and deserve a fun and safe childhood. Brian was adopted and knows the impact that this had on his life and we both feel we want to provide this opportunity to another. We want to provide a new opportunity for these children to thrive no matter their past. We are more than ready to take on this challenge and super exciting adventure in our livest that will change the lives of all involved.
